Carpenter ants are larger black or red-and-black ants with strong jaws. You might spot them around window frames, decks, and wood trim. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood, but they tunnel through it to create galleries, leaving behind sawdust-like frass.

Over time, carpenter ants can weaken moisture-damaged wood and create soft spots in trim, stairs, and decks. The sooner you deal with them, the easier it is to protect your home’s structure.
