How to Identify It

Identifying an American Cockroach

American cockroaches are the largest cockroach species commonly found in homes, often called “water bugs” or “palmetto bugs” depending on the region. They prefer moist, warm environments and are common in basements, crawl spaces, and sewer systems.

  • Reddish-brown body, 1½–2 inches long — significantly larger than German cockroaches
  • Yellow figure-eight pattern on the shield-like plate just behind the head
  • Both sexes have wings and can fly short distances, particularly in warm weather
  • Nymphs are gray-brown and wingless; darken as they develop
  • Found near floor drains, sewers, basements, and utility rooms

The Threat

Why American Cockroaches Are Dangerous

American cockroaches travel from sewers and drains picking up dangerous pathogens. Their large size means they transport more contamination per individual than smaller species.

Disease Vector

Travel through sewage systems picking up Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli — then spread these bacteria across kitchen surfaces and food prep areas.

Allergen Source

Droppings, shed skins, and saliva are potent allergens known to trigger asthma attacks, particularly in children living in infested homes.

Fast Spread

One female produces 150+ offspring per year. Once established in a building's plumbing, they spread rapidly between units and floors.

Warning Signs

Signs You Have an American Cockroach Problem

American cockroaches prefer dark, damp areas — finding evidence near drains, utility penetrations, and basements is the most common warning.

  • Dark reddish-brown droppings with ridged sides, about ¼ inch long — near drains and along baseboards
  • Musty, oily smell in basements, crawl spaces, and utility rooms
  • Shed exoskeletons near floor drains, crawl space vents, and laundry areas
  • Egg capsules (oothecae) — dark mahogany-colored, about ½ inch long — near warm, moist harborage
  • Sightings near drains or in garages, especially when lights turn on at night

How We Treat It

BRD Pest Solutions’s American Cockroach Elimination Process

Treating American cockroaches requires eliminating both the interior population and the exterior harborage areas they breed in — garages, crawl spaces, and sewer entry points.

Entry Point Audit

We identify all plumbing penetrations, floor drain gaps, crawl space vents, and exterior foundation gaps where cockroaches enter and establish inside the structure.

Barrier & Bait Treatment

Professional baits placed at harborage points paired with a perimeter treatment that creates a residual barrier. Crawl spaces and utility areas are treated directly.

Structural Exclusion

We help seal the key entry points — drain covers, utility gaps, and foundation cracks — so new populations cannot re-enter after treatment.
