How to Identify It

Identifying a Mosquito

Mosquitoes are slender, long-legged flying insects. Only females bite — they need blood to develop eggs. They breed in any standing water, including as little as a bottle cap's worth left undisturbed for a week.

  • Slender body ⅛–⅜ inch; long legs; single pair of wings with tiny scales
  • Females have a long straight proboscis for piercing skin; males feed on nectar only
  • Most active at dawn and dusk, but Aedes species bite throughout the day
  • Breed in standing water — ponds, birdbaths, clogged gutters, plant saucers, tarps, tires
  • Eggs hatch within 24–48 hours in warm water; adults emerge in as few as 7–10 days

The Threat

Why Mosquitoes Are Dangerous

Mosquitoes are vectors for some of the world's most dangerous diseases. In the US, West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and heartworm in pets are the primary concerns.

Disease Transmission

Transmit West Nile Virus, Zika, Chikungunya, and dengue. West Nile neurological disease causes lasting neurological damage in hundreds of Americans annually.

Pet Health Risk

Heartworm disease — transmitted through mosquito bites — is potentially fatal in dogs and cats. Monthly preventatives reduce risk but do not eliminate exposure.

Unusable Outdoor Space

Persistent mosquito pressure turns decks, patios, and pools into unusable spaces — reducing the livability and value of outdoor investments all season.

Warning Signs

Signs You Have a Mosquito Problem

Mosquito pressure builds gradually as breeding sites accumulate. The problem is almost always worse than what you observe at any given moment.

  • Persistent biting outdoors, especially near shaded vegetation, tree lines, and standing water
  • Standing water in gutters, plant saucers, birdbaths, tire swings, or low yard depressions
  • High-pitched buzzing near ears, particularly at dusk and dawn
  • Red, swollen bites appearing overnight on family members or pets
  • Large numbers visible resting in shaded vegetation during warm afternoon hours

How We Treat It

BRD Pest Solutions’s Mosquito Elimination Process

Eliminating mosquitoes requires both killing the active adult population and eliminating or treating the breeding sites where larvae develop into new adults.

Breeding Site Assessment

We walk your property identifying all standing water sources — including hidden ones like clogged gutters, low spots, ornamental ponds, and plant containers.

Targeted Barrier Spray

Professional residual insecticide applied to vegetation, fence lines, and resting areas where adult mosquitoes harbor during the day. Treatment lasts 3–4 weeks.

Larvicide Application

BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) — a naturally occurring bacteria toxic only to larvae — is applied to standing water that cannot be eliminated, breaking the breeding cycle.
