Pest Season on the Gulf Coast, Month by Month

Houston barely gets an off season. Spring brings termite swarms, including Formosan swarms that fly at night in late spring and early summer and are drawn to exterior lighting. Ant activity ramps up early and stays high.

Summer combines heat with the humidity that Gulf Coast pests thrive on, keeping mosquito and cockroach pressure at its peak. Heavy rain and flooding produce two distinct surges: standing water triggers a mosquito hatch within about a week, and displaced rodents move toward buildings on higher ground. Fall and winter are milder rather than dormant, so treatment here is genuinely year-round work.

Two Pests That Make Houston Different

Houston carries some of the heaviest Formosan termite pressure of any major American city. Formosan colonies can reach several million workers, an order of magnitude beyond native subterranean colonies, and that scale is why they can do structural damage in a few years rather than a few decades. They also build carton nests inside walls, which means a colony can sustain itself above ground without soil contact. If you see a night swarm around your porch light in May or June, treat it as urgent rather than seasonal.

The second is the tawny crazy ant, first found in the Houston area in 2002 and now established across the Gulf Coast counties. They form enormous, dense populations, displace fire ants, and are notably attracted to electrical equipment, where they nest inside outdoor units, meter boxes, and electronics and cause failures. They do not respond to standard fire ant baits, so identification matters before treatment.

Houston Pest Control Questions

How do I know if I have Formosan termites or native ones?

Swarm timing and behavior are the clearest clues. Formosan termites swarm at night in late spring and early summer and are strongly drawn to lights, while native subterranean termites swarm during the day, typically in spring after rain. Formosan colonies are also far larger and can nest inside walls without soil contact. Your technician confirms the species during inspection, because treatment differs.

What are the tiny ants getting into my electrical boxes?

Almost certainly tawny crazy ants, which are established throughout the Houston area. They are attracted to electrical equipment and nest inside outdoor units and meter boxes, sometimes causing equipment failures. They do not take standard fire ant baits, so a treatment that worked on fire ants will not solve this. Correct identification is the first step.

What should I expect after flooding?

Two waves. Mosquitoes hatch from new standing water within about a week, so eliminating containers of water around the property matters immediately. Rodents displaced from burrows and storm drains push toward buildings on higher ground over the following weeks. Both are predictable, which means both can be treated proactively rather than after they are established.
